Quick tips… the secrets to healthy looking skin…

My new right hand lady in my day job Lucy has been throwing some ideas around about things I should blog about and this was a suggestion of hers. Lucy has great skin and was telling me about some of the things she does to keep her complexion glowing so I thought I would share both hers and my tips…

I’m sure this one must sound like an obvious one but…

Drink water

You should try to drink 2.5 litres of water a day. Not only is it important to keep yourself hydrated, drinking water helps to suppress your appetite and the best bit is it does wonders for your skin and hair. Drinking water leads to a healthier digestive system which in turn helps to prevent acne and spot break outs. A good tip is to keep a 1 litre bottle on your desk at work this way you’ll be able to keep track of how much you’re drinking. It’s so simple there’s no real reason we can’t all drink more water!

L’Oreal Nude Magique BB Cream – SPF 12

A huge percentage of us put something on our face every morning. Be it face cream, tinted moisturiser, foundation or BB cream. Why not save yourself the worry of prematurely ageing skin and invest in one of the above that includes an SPF. The sun can age your skin, through clouds and even in the winter so it’s not just something to consider in the Summer months.

Here are a few good suggestions for you…

Take Multi-Vitamin tablets

Not everyone has the perfect diet, in fact very few of us do so taking multi-vitamins can really help to to ensure your body’s not missing any vital vitamins. Vitamins A and E are great for skin appearance and Vitamin C stimulate collagen development which helps with the elasticity and also helping it look healthy and bright. It’s no real trial to add one tablet to your daily routine and they don’t have to cost the earth either so pick up a packet today!

Don’t smoke

Now I don’t want to sound like I’m lecturing but the fact of the matter is that smoking really does add to the ageing process of your skin, it makes it duller and it depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health. That’s all I really need to say so if your skin is important to you, give it up! 🙂

Go easy on your skin

I can highly recommend you ditch the face wipes and use cotton wool and cleanser. Apply the cleanser to dampened cotton wool and use in circular motions to gently remove eye make-up and dirt. It will do the same job without drying out your skin in the way face wipes do.

When applying eye creams, use your middle or 3rd finger, you’ll find the pressure you use with these fingers is far less than your index finger.

Avoid any strong soaps, anything you use on your face should be gentle. Definitely buy something specifically for your face and never use shower gels or body washes, they’re far too harsh for your skin. A good value and kind to your skin face wash is Simple – Kind to Skin, Refreshing facial wash gel.

I hope you’ve found these very simple but tips useful… have you got any of your own you would like to share with me? I’d love to hear from you

Make-up product of the week! Revlon Lippy!

Why is it, that when you’ve got a holiday looming you always start to worry about everything you have to do before you go? When am I going to pack? Have I got time to get everything washed before I go? Of course I have, I’ve never failed at washing my clothes before so why would I now! Irrational but true!! Anyway the one thing I always seem to have time for at the moment is make-up. I just can’t get enough. I’ve downloaded every beauty app under the sun, reading all the magazines and am always interested in other peoples make-up finds. So this week’s product of the week is a new find and a new brand for me that has come through my reading and gas bagging!

I’ve never really bought Revlon make-up before. But had heard some good things about their lipsticks. So I took the plunge and bought a couple to try them out. Turns out they live up to their reviews.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick is my product of the week. They’re vibrant colours and come in massive varieties. Superdrug currently sell them for £7.49 each so they don’t break the bank either. My current favourite shades are Wild Orchid and Revlon Red (both pictured below).

Revlon – Wild Orchid Lipstick

Revlon Red Lipstick

This Revlon Red lipstick is perfect to create the crimson lip look which has been a very recent lip trend.

It should be known that Revlon isn’t the most ethical of companies they do still test on animals (as do thousands of companies out there) but they report regularly on improving their ethical trading status. In my experience lipstick is a difficult product to buy 100% ethically. I find the quality of the 100% ethical products are no where near as long lasting as other lipsticks and often aren’t as vibrant. It’s not something I wish to do when spending my money on products but for lipsticks I do find I need to make an exception – honesty’s the best policy!

Thoughts and comments welcomed!!!

I cant guarantee that all of the beauty products I recommend will suit you. I only use products I personally think are good after trying them on myself and my clients but everyone’s skin is different and it’s possible to be allergic to anything. If at all possible, test products out on yourself before purchasing.

A good workman never blames their tools…

Today I want to talk to you about brushes! I went for dinner with my bestie last night and we were talking about my blog. She was telling me what she found useful for her. We got talking about brushes and how she now wants a foundation brush from reading my blog! I’m sorry ladies I’m probably not helping your bank balances am I? Anyway I thought I would write about the best tools of the trade and where to buy them. To cut it short, I really rate body shop brushes, they all compliment eachother and are great quality, last pretty much forever and are easy to clean.

Of course you can use your fingers and the small spongy applicators that often come with make-up sets to apply your make-up. But I find them awkward to use and quite cumbersome. Having a decent set of brushes will last you a life-time and well worth the money.

Foundation Brush

If you’re a regular to my blog then you’ll know that I champion foundation brushes. In short they make your foundation last longer, easier to apply and more evenly! For more information on foundation application have a read of my How to guide on applying streak free foundation.

Eyeshadow brushes

This is probably my most used brush, it’s a big round sponge, great for applying base layers of eyeshadow or if you’re just using one shade. It’s really easy to clean and using it damp is really effective for having stronger and darker and more vibrant eye shadow. You’ll find most eyeshadows are more effective applied with a damp / wet brush. Give it a try it may not work for all but I can tell you all body shop eye shadows can be used wet. One downside to this brush, as it’s not like the other brushes with bristles it doesn’t last so long and is likely to need replacing.

Slanted Brush

This is great for doing more complicated make up looks. Dampen the brush and apply eye shadow to the brush and it creates a really strong colour. You can use this brush to create a smokey eyed look by building up your colour in the outer corners of your eyes. Then use the blender brush (below) to blend it in with the colour on the rest of your eye socket. Only downside of this brush is that the metal top part can come away from the plastic handle, however this is easily fixed with a bit of super glue!!

Blender Brush

This brush does exactly what it says on the tin, it’s for blending. As mentioned above you can apply strong make-up using the above brushes and this brush will help to blend the colours together but also blending upwards towards your eyebrow to avoid that drag queen look!!

Lipstick and Concealer Brush

Yes it might seem strange that I’m adding this brush under eye shadow brushes, but I find it great for applying wet eye shadow to create eyeliner. It’s particularly fab for vibrant colours like emerald greens and purples. As a lip and concealer brush it’s great too. Its narrow enough to be able to easily apply either product and will make your make-up last so much longer than if you were applying it directly.

Face and Body Brush

I love this brush! It feels so lovely on your skin and applying blusher with it is so simple, a couple of wipes of this brush across your cheeks and you’re done. They add the body part because you can bronze your cleveage and arms with this too!

Blusher Brush

Whilst you can use the face and body brush for applying blusher, the blusher brush works much better for high lighting cheek bones and putting your blusher in the right place. (Just under your cheek bones in a smiley face shape up to your temple). Then just blend with the face and body brush.

Line Softner (no image available but has a spongy nib on the end of a normal brush handle)

If you’re not brilliant at applying eye liner then this tool is definitely for you. Apply any eye liner / pencil and use this to soften the line and smudge it in. It helps to stop your eye liner spreading down your face and it’s much easier to create a soft lane with this. Oh and it’s great for smokey eyes too!

Well that’s your kit, if you want my top 3 of these I’d go for the Face and Body brush, Smudger brush and foundation brush! It’s worth looking to see if body shop are offering any christmas brush gift sets this year – they often do. You can often buy 5 brushes for half the normal price around christmas time so worth a look.

Just a quick note about cleaning your brushes…

Obviously I use mine on other people so I very reguarly wash my brushes. I use either fairy liquid and hot water (should be quite hot to kill any germs) or handwash is fine too. You just will find that the water needs to be hot to effectively clean away any greasy make-up products like foundation and lippy!
